An investment in knowledge pays the best interest

This is the last article from the theme that we have been discussing for the past few weeks,
Has ‘Education’ Lost its Passion?, Passion for Learning Begins With 'Family' and ‘Exceptional Educators’ in our lives. It seems clear that there is always a personal drive for excellence where passion is involved. We can see this truth in our educational goals, pursuit of knowledge and our striving for a better life and society. How far are we as a nation willing to go to build a society that is passionate about learning?
As individuals, you and I are not left out from the equation of passion in education. I understand that sometimes it is easy to blame our surroundings, family, educators, etc. for our lack of passion to learn or our failure to achieve academic success. In no way should we downplay the effects a particular environment has on us. The point to consider is that although we may not all have equal opportunities, each of us has the power to choose the occasionally difficult path of education for a better future. Passion for education or in other words the joy of learning is an inculcated habit
Here are some simple examples on how we can develop this passion and become lifelong learners regardless of what point in life we are at now.
Make the most of our time - As someone once said, time is the most precious commodity. A dollar lost can be earned again but a minute lost is lost for eternity. With our busy schedules these days, 24 hours does not seem to be enough. This work out to 1440 minutes credited to each one of us every single day and if we could set aside a mere 60 minutes of that 1440 minutes a day and commit to learning something of interest, this will make a world of difference over a period of time. Just to reiterate, making time for something is a choice we have to make and faithfully commit to every day. When we look back someday, we will be amazed at how far we have come.
Learn something new each day - An interesting thing to do, is to commit to learn something new each day. It can be something as simple as learning a new word or trying to understand why the earth’s axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. All that this exercise seeks to achieve is to develop the habit of learning, it is not focused on the mastery of anything in particular. This practice will transform the way we look at things and we will begin to develop a passion for learning that will continue to grow exponentially. This can be life-changing!
Discover your passion - When we discover our passion - focus and perseverance follows. Learning is no longer a chore but a delight. It is akin to a cold glass of water on a really hot day. We all have different things that we are passionate about and interestingly enough we may find that these are things that we are naturally quite good at. Our passions may not always promise to put food on our tables but then again why does that seem impossible? In order for this to be a reality, it should start with a level-headed commitment to pursue and develop what we are passionate about but at the same time not neglecting our commitments to family, work, and ourselves. When we discover our passion and act on it, we will be the best version of ourselves. This is when we make our greatest contribution to society.
Education indeed sets us on a course for a brighter future but passion is the compass that gets us there. If we respect ourselves enough, then developing a passion for education is a duty we owe to ourselves. Let’s challenge ourselves to make these minor changes in our daily schedules and after a month, six months or a year, looking into a mirror, we will see someone who is more confident, accomplished, and happy.
