“Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow.”
| Anthony J. D’Angelo |
Education has for the most part of it been seen as a tool to advance the human race. Individually it has been a medium for people to achieve their positions of financial security, power and status. Why has passion been removed from such a crucial decision in our lives? This is something we may often times take for granted, or rather, not even think they belong together. We feel that getting an education is something we ‘need to do’ and we can’t wait to finish it and get on with ‘real life’. The pursuit of education has gone from acquiring knowledge and understanding to a checkbox on our resumes. Therefore, we have traded the very purpose of education for something less meaningful.
Where there is passion, there is always a drive for excellence and I am sure that we all can testify to this at some point in our lives. When it comes down to basics, being passionate about education does not mean that you would love or enjoy every subject. You might enjoy the study of English but not Mathematics or you might like Law and dislike Engineering. This is only normal based on our natural inclination towards certain things more than others. Being passionate about education really means – finding the joy in learning, desiring to continuously be better or simply the child-like fascination of wanting to know how things work.
However, looking at the bigger picture, there hasn’t been enough effort put in, to build a society that is passionate about continuous learning. Every little child must be exposed to the idea that learning is fun and every grown-up should grow up with this idea deeply rooted in them.
The point to emphasize here is that whether it is learning something long term like a degree, or something short term like learning how to cook a new dish, there should be a passion for learning driving us to explore something new, every day, every month and every year.
